Early maturing short grain variety from Hokkaido. Considered a lowland rice (preferring paddy cultivation), however they grow fine for us in regular garden conditions alongside our eggplant and bush beans. From an early June transplant date we harvest around the end of September. I find the grains fall off their heads quite easily, which means threshing is easier although we likely lose a little bit in the field at harvest time. 40+ seeds

Sowing Start seeds indoors about 4-6 weeks before planting out. We sow ours late April
Transplant outdoors After the risk of frost (for us early June)
Spacing 4-8" apart, in rows 2+ft apart
Soil requirements Regular garden soil is fine. They thrive in a range of soil types (they seem to enjoy our sandy loam)
Light Full sun
Days to maturity Roughly 110-120 from transplant
Harvest Cut the heads when kernels become firm to the touch.
