Devil's Claw
New for 2025 - Proboscidea parviflora - One of the weirdest plants I've grown (among a farm full of weird plants!). This annual grow into a stocky bush, about 3' tall and 4-5' wide. Sticky and mildly smelly leaves, beautiful flowers and mysterious hooked pods. The pods start out green, and at maturity the flesh falls off revealing a woody and downright alien claw within. As the claw dries, it splits into 2-4 sharp hooks, and reveals the seam of seeds protected inside. The seeds are edible (like a sunflower kernel) and the young green pods can be eaten in a similar fashion to okra. A plant of the Southwest desert and northern Mexico, cultivated by the Indigenous peoples of that region for weaving fibers and oil-rich seeds. 10 seeds
