Vigna unguiculata subsp. sesquipedalis -A different species than the common bean, Yardlong Beans are a cousin to cowpeas and black-eyed peas. Popular in Asia, but rarely grown in Canada. I've been growing this variety for the past several years, and it often out-yields many of my regular beans! The climbing vines bloom in late summer with sweetly fragrant purple flowers, followed quickly by the extremely long green pods. Not actually a full yard, but a solid 50-60 cm. Steam them or eat them raw. Compared to regular beans they're more firm and meaty, but never tough. Limited supply, 25 seeds (4 g)
