Red Fife Wheat

The famed heirloom bread wheat. Tall plants with plump heads of red kernel. Named after David Fife, a farmer near Peterborough, ON who in 1840 was sent the original seed by a Scottish friend (the seed was a Ukrainian variety). The wheat proved to be a hit in it’s new Canadian conditions, and by the late 1800s it was the most widely planted variety in Canada. It gradually lost favour to new-fangled varieties (including Marquis Wheat, it’s direct descendant), but is currently enjoying a resurgence in popularity. 140+ seeds (5 g)
