Steeves Caseknife Pole Bean
New for 2025 - Prolific pole bean, with distinctively curved green pods. It's a distinct category of bean called 'Leather Britches'. Back in the days before canning, the fresh flat pods were picked and strung up in the house to air dry. The resulting leathery pods would keep for long periods of time, and would be soaked overnight before boiling. I've yet to try this myself, but I'm told they become silky and delicious. This method was the main way to preserve fresh beans for hundreds of years. All that said, they can also just be eaten as a fresh bean!
'Caseknife' is the original variety, in the 1800s it was a common variety across North America. This strain was grown and saved by multiple generations of the Steeves family since at least the 1940s in Edgett's Landing, NB. These seeds found their way to Angela MacDougall (of Fundy Farms) who passed them along to Steph.
