Mushrooms
- Info on shipping: Liquid cultures can only be shipped when temperatures are above freezing (to avoid them freezing in the mail). Any mushroom cultures ordered now will be shipped in spring 2025. Feel free to order them any time along with your seeds; we'll mail the seeds first and the liquid cultures later.

Our mushroom culture offerings were first curated by our friend Megan Giffen, who produced them up until 2024. Last year she handed the reins over to Malachi Warr, who some you may already know as Steph's son (of Twisted Brook Farm). Malachi is 16, and already an experienced mushroom cultivator and forager. We're excited to have him carrying on these mushrooms cultures!
What's important to know about liquid cultures, is that they take a certain process to grow and eventually fruit. They're one of the first steps, and could be compared to a seed (or maybe a young transplant is the best analogy).
Liquid cultures come in syringes. From the syringe you can inoculate sterile grain, and later on the sawdust or wood chips or logs from which will fruit mushrooms. You can also bulk up your liquid culture by inoculating sterile honey water, which is the way to keep your strain growing indefinitely (the mushroom equivalent of seed saving).
In terms of equipment, you'll want to make sure you have access to a pressure cooker (or instant pot) and electric drill. A few other materials you'll need (like mason jars) you may already have around the house.
Megan has created a growing guide that explains the basic procedures. From liquid culture to fruiting substrate stages of the life cycle. Definitely recommended for new growers!
