Blue Wood Aster

New for 2025 - Symphyotrichum cordifolium - aka Heartleaf Aster - Native perennial fall-blooming aster. Nova Scotia has an array of native aster species (I'm a plant guy and even I find their ID baffling). Out of all the kinds that grow on our farm, I have a particular appreciation for these ones. In September and October, small light-blue flowers appear in incredible abundance, the plants can be more bloom than foliage. Important late season food source for all kinds of pollinators. Their native range includes most of eastern North America. Found in old fields and forest edges. Tolerant of both shade and sun, with part shade being their favourite.
