An open cross up of the hardiest collards that make it through winter unscathed. We plant in spring and harvest all year, though they are at their sweetest and buttery best after the first fall frosts. The collard patch is raided regularly throughout the winter as they continue to weather the winter storms and pick right up in spring for great production of early spring greens.

Growing Info
Sowing I like to sow mine indoors, from early spring onwards. Transplant out when 4-5 weeks old.
Timing Collards grow best on cool weather, yet also tolerate summer heat better than most greens do. Early spring and late summer/fall are the two best planting windows in my experience.
Spacing 6-12" between plants, 24"+ between rows
Soil Well amended, moist yet well draining is ideal
Light Full sun to part shade
Life cycle Biennial
Cold hardiness Our varieties (usually) overwinter for us here in zone 6. I'm sure they could go colder with mulch and/or snow cover.
