Juglans nigra - Valued for their nuts as well as their dark lustrous wood. Native across the deciduous woodlands of the eastern US, and the Carolinian forest of south Ontario. Black Walnut is a large and long-lived tree, upwards of 80' tall and 200+ years. They do best in full sun (shade intolerant) and fertile well-drained soil. However they're a tough and adaptable species and will grow in a variety of soil types. Two trees are needed for pollination. They start bearing nuts at around 10 years. Their husks are a strong brown tannin dye (as anyone who has shucked walnuts likely knows).

10 seeds

From Blackbird Hollow

These seeds are partially stratified. We've begun the process, and you'll want to keep the seeds cold and damp in your fridge to continue stratification until early spring. Plant them outdoors into the ground, or into large pots (protection from squirrels recommended)

Note on shipping: Walnut seeds require tracked package shipping ($20 per order), since they're too bulky for letter mail (our basic $5 option).

Growing Info
Stratification We've begun the stratification process, keeping these seeds cool and lightly damp since harvest time. You'll want to out the in the fridge when you receive them, and keep them cool and damp until sowing time.
Sowing Plant outdoors in early spring, soon after the soil can be worked (April is usually a good time here in NS). I like to start them in a nursery bed, and transplant them to their final location the following dormant season. But they can also be direct sown where you want the tree to grow (easier and less transplant stress).
Transplanting Black Walnuts have a deep taproot, so transplanting is best done while young (within the first year is ideal). Best to move them while dormant, either in fall or early spring.
Spacing For wide branching trees, 40-80 ft between trees. If the goal is tall straight timber quality trees, plant them closer (15 ft x 15 ft)
Soil Deep and well draining yet moist is their ideal.
Light Full sun
