New for 2025 - Juglans cinerea x Juglans spp. - Walnut family cross between Butternut and Heartnut. Buartnuts are fast growing nut trees, reaching up to 90' in height and producing nuts around 8-10 years of age. The nuts are heart-shaped like Heartnut but with a spikier outer shell. Sweet mild flavour. Expect some variability in nut shape from seedlings, some will be more heart shaped other more cylindrical (like butternut). Two trees (or more) are needed for pollination.

10 seeds

From Blackbird Hollow

These seeds are partially stratified. We've begun the process, and you'll want to keep the bag in your fridge to continue stratification until early spring. Plant them outdoors into the ground, or into large pots.

Note: Our nut tree seeds require tracked shipping in a box ($20 per order), since they're too bulky for letter mail (our basic $5 option).

Growing Info
Stratification These seeds will ship from us partially stratified. Keep them cold and lightly damp until spring.
Sowing Start them outdoors in early spring. Either in pots or directly in the ground. I like starting nut seedlings in the ground in a nursery bed, for transplanting after one year of growth. Protection from hungry squirrels is recommended!
Transplanting Plant into their final position once seedlings are established. I find most nut trees transplant best when young. After their first year of growth is a good time, either in the fall after leaves drop (November) or early the next spring.
Spacing Buartnut trees will spread to about 40 ft at maturity.
Soil Well drained
Light Full sun
Cold hardiness These seeds are collected from local zone 6 trees. They should be safely hardy to zone 5, and perhaps to zone 4
