B. oleracea - We’ve been quite enamoured by collards in recent years, and Champion is one of our favourite varieties we’ve tried so far. Thick, almost waxy textured dark green leaves. Extremely cold hardy, they can be harvested through the winter in a similar way as kale. Our top choice for sautéing; when cooked the leaves retain a toothsome quality that other cooked greens don’t have.  250 seeds (1 g)

Growing Info
Sowing I like to sow mine indoors, from early spring onwards. Transplant out when 4-5 weeks old.
Timing Collards grow best on cool weather, yet also tolerate summer heat better than most greens do. Early spring and late summer/fall are the two best planting windows in my experience.
Spacing 6-12" between plants, 24"+ between rows
Soil Well amended, moist yet well draining is ideal
Light Full sun to part shade
Life cycle Biennial
Cold hardiness Our varieties (usually) overwinter for us here in zone 6. I'm sure they could go colder with mulch and/or snow cover.
