New for 2026 - Crambe maritima - Sea kale is a hardy perennial vegetable. They can be found growing wild along beaches of northern Europe, where they're often foraged.

Lily White is a cultivar, with lighter coloured and wavier leaves than the wild type. The thick succulent young leaves emerge first thing in spring, and are delicious as a cooked green. The florets can be eaten just like broccoli. After the plant is a few years established, try blanching the early spring shoots by covering them with ceramic pot or bucket to deprive them of light for about 2 weeks. The resulting shoots are extra tender.

The flowers are an incredible show in late spring! 3' tall masses of small white blossoms, which bees adore. Honestly worth growing for the flowers alone. The seeds are unique; a thick corky shell containing a plump dark seed. This is an adaptation to float the waves in search of new beaches to grow. They require scarification before sowing. 30 seeds

Growing Info
Scarification Each seed is surrounded by a thick corky shell, which needs to be carefully removed before sowing. Try opening it with scissors, wire snippers or whatever feels comfortable and safe. Remove just enough shell to see the fragile seed, not too much to damage it.
Sowing Start seeds indoors early spring. Germination is naturally slow and erratic, it's the way sea kale are. Expect germination to occur unevenly over about 2 months. The germ rate is inherently low, so we include extra seeds to compensate.
Transplant Outdoors after risk of frost
Soil Well drained, medium fertility. Not fussy, and adaptable to a wide range.
Spacing 24" between plants
Light Full sun
Life cycle Perennial
