New for 2026 - Astragalus membranaceus - aka Huang Qi. Lush 4' tall perennial in the legume family. They vine and climb with small tendrils similar to peas or vetch. Countless small yellow flowers attract bumblebees. The roots are a prized medicinal, harvest them from well established 2-4 year old plants. They have a long history of use in Chinese medicine. Hardy to zone 5. I've met a good number of growers who overwinter them in Nova Scotia with no special care. 80+ seeds

Growing Info
Stratification Give the seeds 3-4 weeks of cold/moist stratification. Afterwards, lightly scarify the seeds with fine sandpaper (not too hard to damage the seeds). This is all to soften the hard seed coat to let water through.
Sowing After stratifying/scarifying, sow seeds indoors early spring (April is when we start ours)
Transplant Outdoors after risk of frost
Spacing 12-18" between plants
Soil Well draining soil, they tolerate dry conditions after they get established.
Light Full sun to part shade
Harvest Roots, from year 2-4 plants
Life cycle Perennial
Hardiness zone 5
