Redroot Sage

New for 2026 - Salvia miltiorrhiza - aka Chinese Red Sage, Dan-Shen. Medicinal perennial herb. Leafy plants, with very attractive blue flowers that bloom throughout mid-late summer. The vibrant red roots are are the part used medicinally. Considered to be borderline winter hardy here in Nova Scotia, most sources list it as hardy to zone 6. They can be grown as an annual in colder areas. We've been watching this herb overwinter for a good handful of years now (both at our farm and at Floreren) with happy seeming plants coming back each spring. I'm sure with some mulch and a sheltered spot one could push the hardiness boundaries a bit further.
