Heinz 2653 Paste Tomato
An older open-pollinated variety. At one point the standard commercial variety for making a certain brand of ketchup. Now quite rare.
Determinate and early maturing paste tomato. Excellent choice for growers with shorter or cooler seasons that have trouble getting big yields of other paste tomatoes. Sets fruit and ripens quickly, so it's also a good choice to beat late blight. Fruits are smaller than other paste tomatoes, with a distinctive roma-like shape and very little juice. We found its flavour less than San Marzano or Amish Paste, but its reliability to produce abundantly in any given season makes it more than worthwhile to grow in our maritime climate.
